Wandering in Wonderful Indonesia: Sukuh Temple

Candi Sukuh is one of those temples rarely visited by those who go to Jogjakarta because of the length of time one has to spend to get there and the seeming lack of interesting places to see on the way.  But, since Angge wanted to see it because of something Mayan about it (the shape of the temple looks like a Mayan pyramid) and I’m always up for anything barely visited by tourists, we asked Herman to bring us to Candi Sukuh.

Candi Sukuh

Candi Sukuh is located on the slopes of Lawu Mountain, a couple of hours of driving away from the city of Jogjakarta.  It is dubbed as “The World’s Less-Known Erotic Temple” by YogYES.com, perhaps because of the many statues and ornaments that are related to sexuality, which can be found in the temple.

The complex is quite small but the structures are interesting.  It was good that the local guide was free to give us a tour and tell us about the place.

Each level of the temple represents a stage of life that one has to go through to reach what they call nirvana, or heaven.  Here’s a photo of Angge and Kuya, on the steep steps going up the nirvana.

And, here’s Angge going down from the nirvana.

I would recommend visiting Candi Sukuh, if you’re interested in seeing the structures, learn about the stories of each, and if you have some time to spare.  And, even if I wished that we had found a different guide, someone who could at the very least say wahina (or, vagina) with less creepiness, I still enjoyed our visit, especially because it made for a good travel story among us crazies that lasted even after the trip. :)
